Student Experiences Life in Variety of Cultures How many Harding students could say that they had appeared on ABC's World ews Tonight? There was at least one-Amy Christy. Amy, a freshman, is most recently from Fayetteville , North Carolina. When her Army chaplain father was called to Saudi Arabia unexpectedly in the spring of '91, ABC came to call. The network sent a news crew to her history class at Westover High chool. She was one of those unfortunate individuals who was captured for antiquity with tears in her eyes. For an 18-year-old, Amy has had quite an adventurous life. She was born August 29, 1974, in Pyongtek, Korea . Her mother was a 16-year-old Korean, and her father was an American se1viceman from Hawaii. Her parents never married and her mother decided to give Amy up for adoption. About a month later, the Christy family came to Korea with the Army. They went to visit the orphanage where Arny was staying and their 4-yea r-olcl daughter '' picked out" Arny. Amy legally became part of their American family. She said that there are pros and cons to mi litary life. Amy used to despise moving every three years. She said that the first year was spent making friends and finding a niche. The second year was "fun and free ." The third year wa spent dreading the next move. That left little time to really sit back and enjoy her life. Her most difficult move was leaving Panama for Fort Monmouth, ew Jersey. In Panama , all of her friends were military, so they could relate to her struggles. It was easy for her to make friends. In contrast, ew ] ersey was ve1y fast-paced with fewer milita1y families. She found it much more difficult to adjust. One benefit that she has found from all of this moving is that she has become an excellent pen-pal. Amy said that she till writes all her close fri nds from as far back as kindergarten. She is very good at keeping track of people. Also, Amy has enjoyed experiencing cliff rent people and cultures. After her onemonth stay in Korea , she lived such places as Pennsylvania, ew York, orth Carolina, California, Panama and ew Jersey. In the United States, she said that the variety of experiences and lifestyles from state to state is incredible. She has enjoyed the diversity enough that she cannot imagine living in the same area all her life , as many people do. With so much diver ity in her life , Amy was blessed to be given a stable and loving Amy Christy enjoys change. She has lived in a number of different loca ti ons and likes ro adapt to each one. family life. She said that she has always been treated as a normal member of the family, and never as an outsider because she looked a little different. Amy feels strongly that God arranged her adoption.
