Canadian Reflects on Differences at Harding Neighbors from the north gave us several unique people to add to our student body who are making their place in the world . Michelle Martin was one of these Canadian students. Michelle was born in Elmira, Ontario , Canada. A 19-year-old freshman majoring in psychology, she wants to specialize in child psychology and work with abused children. Marti n said , ''I love chi ldren and helping people so I thought I would combine them." She hopes one day to have her own practice. Michelle pointed out some interesting fac ts about differences between Canada and the United States. She said , "We are more concerned with the environment than you are here. We recycle a lot more. " Another difference is in the way people receive medical care. The Canadian government pays for medical expenses while Ame ricans have to pay fortheirown. Michelle said it was a surprise to her when she got a bill after seeing a doctor here. She said it has made it harder to go to the doctor when she is sick because she doesn 't always have the money to pay for it. Canadians pay so much every month and can go to the doctor as often as th y want. The biggest difference for Michelle has been in the area of religion because her family is of the M nnonite religion. , he said it has been hard because they are more liberal. Women can speak in their assemblies and instruments are used so she has felt somewhat out of place in the worship services here. Though there are things about America she doesn 't like , he has found one good thing about the South.
