Cafeteria Helper Loves Job, Even After 27 Years Students at Harding know Polly Smith. They might no t know they know her , but they do. Polly is the sweet little lady with the braided hair who runs ID's through the scanner at the cafe teria. "The stud ents are all just rea lly nice," said Polly. "I've worked here since 1965, and I've enjoyed every year of it. Eve1y one is always so polite , and they always have some thing nice to say to me . It makes me sad when students graduate beca use I miss seeing them around. Sometimes, I'll see an older person come through here, and their face will look familiar, and I'll ask them if I know them from somewhere . It 'll tum out that they used to go to school here 10or15 years ago. " Polly has been working at Harding, from 6:30-2:00, fi ve days a week, for 27 years. "Oh, it's not so bad ," sa id Polly, genuine ly. "I do get a little bit tired standing up for so long, but that's the only drawback to it. I can think of a thousand worse jobs , that's fo r sure! "It's funny , because my 5-year-old grandson woke me up at 6:00 a .m. one Saturday and sa id 'get up Grandma , it 's time to go to worl<!' While Polly Smith may not be personally acquainted with every student attending Harding, she takes a personal interest in her work.
