With the finish line in sight, Shawn Humphrey comes fl ying over the hurdl es . The Bison won first pl ace in the first ever Distri ct 17 indoor meet. The 1991 track season was full of surprises both good and bad. "We had our ups and downs last year," Coach Bryan Phillips said. "But overall , I would call the season a success. " The season started out with a strong recruiting class that would later dwindle in size. "Our strong recruiting class was injured by the time we reached outdoors ," Phillips said. "We lost a guy who had qualified in the lOOm and 200m. This also hurt our relay team of which he wa a member." However, the team did have a few highlights arise. "It was a year of surprises, " Phillips aid. "Tquan Moore was a surprise for u in the triple jump. " Moore ,who previously only managed a 45' effort, leaped 48 '6" to take sixth in nationals and recieved All-American Cf) ~ ~ ' 0.. ::?: 0 ~ ti.. 0 I0 :r: 0honors. Another surprise for the season came from the performance of David Rubio. Rubio , who was unsuccessful at clearing a height in the pole vault at conference the previous year, made a dramatic turn and took second in pole vault competition. "David came in out of nowhere and shocked us with his vault ," Phillips said. In distance running, athan Mills took first in the 5,000m and 10,000m and second in the 15,000m. Damon Work placed first in the 15,000m and second in the 5,000m. The men's team placed second in the outdoor conference season and first place in the Distict 17 indoor title.
