The Lady Bison tennis team, in their first season of intercollegiate competition captured second place in the AIC with a conference record of 10-2. With the approval for a women's tennis team at the spring 1991 board meeting, Head Coach David Elliott immediately began recruiting women to represent Harding on the courts , all ofwhom had experience in high school tennis. The team's late start did not affect the impact they were to make in the ir first sea on. The Lady Bisons ' top player, freshman AmyWhittle, established herself as the number-one player in the conference, then lost her first match of the year in the last match of the season before District against CA. The Lady Bisons ' two conference losses were to UCA, the AIC and District 17 champs . Coach Elliott said that he was pleased with the success of Harding 's young program. "We exce ded what everyone expected out of us in our first year, " he said. Elliott predicted that by next year the Lady Bisons will dominate tennis in the league . The key to our success was that we were not a one-man team. Everyone contributed. Different people came through for us at different times. It was not a one-man show," Coach Elliott said. Finishing the season with a record of 128, this initial team left its mark and set the pace for those to come. -- Vicki Jackson Athletics 139
