Alpha Chi dedicates national offices at Harding The new national offices of the prestigious Alpha Chi honor society were dedicated on campus on October 11. New members were also inducted on this day and a reception and open house honoring both the new members and the new offices was held in the Joseph E. Pryor Science Center. The new two-office suite is nearly 400 square feet in size and is located in the Science Center. Alpha Chi established its national headquarters at Harding in 1983 , and Dr. Joseph P1yor, professor of physical science emeritus, was appointed executive director. Pryor was the first person to hold this position in the organization. Pryor plans to retire from this position in January of 1994, and Dr. Dennis Organ, chairman of Harding's English department , will assume the office. The executive director's responsibilities include registering student members , keeping financial records and mailing supplies to different chapters. Many of the Alpha Chi National Council members were able to attend and participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony for Amy Atkinson and her parents help themse lves to the refreshments . Dr. Robert Sledge of McMurry University in Abiline, Texas, president of the executive committee; Dr. Gayle White of Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, immediate past president; Dr. Otis Mccowan ofBelmont University in Nashville, Tenn., Alpha Chi vice president; and Dr. Walden Freeman of Schreiner College in Kerrville, Texas, Alpha Chi secretary, were present. They were assisted in officiating the ceremony by Dr. Pryor and Dr. Organ, who served as Alpha Chi's associate executive director and editor of publications. Alpha Chi has grown significantly since its inception in February of 1922 on the campus of Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. Alpha Chi has grown to include 289 active chapters at colleges and universities across the nation, and about 10,000 students are inducted into Alpha Chi each year. - Shelley Roberts Organizations 115
