Alpha Chi offers students many opportunities Alpha Chi inducted the academic top 10 percent of the junior and senior classes into their organization during the 1992-93 school yea r. Requirements for admittance into Alpha Chi included achieving a 3.75 grade point average wi th 80 or more hours , or a 3.55 grade point average with a minimum of 104 hours. Alpha Chi inducted members twice during the year, once in the fa ll semester and once in the spring. The fall induction, which was he ld in the American Heritage Auditorium, took place during parent 's weeke nd. During the ceremony, new members recited the Alpha Chi pledge . They then lighted candles, which signified knowledge and membership , and signed the club's registration book. This process was repeated in the spring semester during chapel. Scholarships for academic excellence were one of the many opportunities Alpha Chi offered its members . Alpha Chi sponsored a national scholarship competition in which applicants submitted and presented papers. Two scholarships were also made available on a regional level. One of the scholarships was designated for a senior planning to attend graduate school. The other was for a student who would return to school as a senior in the fall. Brian Mitchell , who represented Harding at Alpha Chi 's 1992 convention, won a regional scholarship for his presentation. Alpha Chi holds regional conventions eve1y even numbered year, while the national conventions are held every odd num112 Organizations bered year. Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana , hosted the 1992 regional convention on April 2- 4. At the convention, Alpha Chi members listened to speakers and watched while their peers presented schol0arly papers. Papers were presented from eve1y' major academic field. Ryan Richardson, who served as president of the organization for the 1992-93 school year, attended the Shreveport convention. Richardson said, "It was interesting to see people our age presenting highly intellectual research papers ." He continued, "I had a lot of fun at the convention. In addition to the presentations , we went to an art gallery, and we saw the Centenary College production of Mozart. " The 1993 national convention was held in Chicago and featured CBS ' network news anchorman, Dan Rather, as a keynote speaker. Alpha Chi offered many opportunities for members. They not only received the distinguishing honor of being a part of Alpha Chi , but they had a chance to win scholarships and observe the achievements of their peers. "I appreciate Alpha Chi's commitment to scholarship," said senior Alpha Chi member, Amy Johnson. "Not only did it recognize scholarship, it also assisted in furthering it through scholarships , conventions , and contacts on both the undergraduate and graduate levels." - Jamie Martin Dr. Long talks to a guest ar the dedication recept ion for the new Alpha Chi o ffi ces. Members and guests were invited to attend the reception in the.J oseph E. Pryor Science Center. Ryan Richardson and Cec ilia Parra pre ide over an Alpha Chi meeting. Alpha Chi business included informing students of scho larship opportunities and vot ing on officers at some of thei r meetings.
