Phi Eta Sigma off to a great start The 301st chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, a national honor society for college freshmen, was installed at Harding University on April 26, 1992. Dr. Jimmy Carr, Sr., Harding's director ofAlumni Relations and assistant to President David Burks , spearheaded the campaign to bring a local chapter of the society to Searcy. Carr, who became a member of Phi Eta Sigma as a freshman at Indiana University, was helped in the effort by Dr. Fred Jewell, also a long-time member, and Dr. Larry Long, the director of Harding's honors program. According to Carr, "Phi Eta Sigma membership is a great honor. It i to the freshman class what Alpha Chi is to the upperclassmen. "It 's strictly an honorary thing," Carr continued, "but it's still a fantastic deal if you can qualify for membership. Once you are elected to the society, you are a member for life. And that lifetime membership only costs $16.00." Membership in the society was available to all freshmen men and women who had achieved a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Carr stated, however, that during any chapter's first year, membership can be extended to sophomores, juniors and seniors who met the grade point qualifications during their freshman year. "Since we were eligible to induct anyone who met the criteria while they were freshmen ," Carr said, "we were able to induct 300 members initially here at Harding. " Induction ceremonies will be held each spring for new members, Carr said, adding that 148 additional Harding students were invited to join Phi Eta Sigma during ceremonies held in March. Student officers for the Harding chapter were elected last spring, and included: David Henry, president; Jimmy Brooks , vice president; Jennifer Swinea, secretary; and Sheri Banks, treasurer. Phi Eta Sigma is the nation's oldest and largest honor society. The society, which was founded at the University of Illinois in 1923, now has over 300 chapters nationwide, comprised of over 500,000 members. - Russ Miller Organizations 111
