Students chosen to receive honor Due to their excellence in academic achievement, leadership in extra-curricular activities , community service and potential for success, 62 Harding students were listed in Who's Who Among American College Students this year. Who's Who is a national publication that began in 1934. It's purpose has heen to seek out and honor those who ar considered leaders in their schools. Annually, more than 1400 institutions of higher learning are represented. Besides the qualities listed above, a potential Who 's Who honoree must meet certain criteria, including completion of at least 90 hours of college credit and a cumulative grade point average of a 2.50 or higher. Students were nominated for Who's Who by faculty members and by the Student Association. ames of all nominees were listed on a ballot, at which tim the students were notified and asked to fill out a sheet of information about themselves and their qualifications. Around 170 students completed the process this year. At that point, faculty members were then given the opportunity to vote on approximately 60 students whom they had found to be most deserving of the honor. The number of students that may receive mention in Who's Who is based on the current enrollment of the school. Jonathan Picklesimer, a math major from Volga, KY, was one of this year's recipients. As president of AGO social club and a member of such programs as American Studies, Honors and theater, he is admittedly busy. In addition, he 108 Organizations tutors other students in math and physics and works as a resident assistant. "It's nice when someone recognizes your hard work," Picklesimer said. "It's good to have a little pat on the back." ''It 's good to know that the teachers think highly enough of you to 'elect you from such a large number of people," added Scott Shappard , a music major from Bartlett, Tenn. In addition to active participation in his social club, T T, Scott was a member of Alpha Chi, American Studies and several of the campus music groups. Being selected for Who 's Who is more than simply an honor to the students involved, however. The national recognition also provided them with some advantages for the future, such as good references for graduate school and future employment. "Gaining recognition from my teachers shows that if I can do something on this campus, I can also be active on another," said public relations major Amy Johnson, who has worked extensively in several areas of Harding's media and is a past president of Shantih social club. ··It's something to put on a resume that shows you're a hard worker, something they'll smile on," Shappard explained. "Being recognized by Who 's Who is an indicator that we're serious about what we're doing," said Picklesimer. "It shows we want to be the best people that we can be.
