REPUBLICANS: Students Work, Promote Party College Republicans finished the year with an increased membership and several successes. Under the leadership of senior Allen Busby from West Memphis, Ark. , the group functioned to inform students about the Republican platform and to encourage students to become more involved in a political party of their choice. Other officers were Michael Latimore, vice-chairman; Duane Barron, treasurer; Malia Reddick, secretary. Dr. Jim Carr was the group's sponsor. Harding's chapter of the national organization had 78 members, making it one of the largest chapters in the state, along with two other strong chapters at UALR and ASU in Jonesboro. Busby reflected, "We took huge steps forward to become a more active group than in recent years." Barron wanted the College Republicans to help the students, a goal he felt the group accomplished. Busby was elected first vice-chairman and Barron was elected state treasurer at the November 2 state convention. Busby said, "The elections this year at the state convention helped pave the way for Harding students in years to come for representation on the state level."
