CHEMISTRY: Chapel, Trips Highlight Activities The chemistry club received a measure of notoriety this year because of their eye-opening demonstrations during chapel. During chemistry week, they demonstrated to the students how magnesium chips were used in the past as a flash for photographers. They used dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) to hold the chips for the safety of the audience. They also ignited a balloon with a hydrogen/oxygen mix, creating a large fire ball on the stage. These same presentations were made for Harding Academy. 60 ORGANIZATIONS They toured the facilities and were shown how chemistry is used to solve crimes. The group was taught about the machines that were used to test substances and identify the chemicals in them. They were also taught about trace evidence where hairs and fabric are analyzed and chemically evaluated for profiles on criminals and their clothing as well as blood types of criminals and their victims. Chantelle Becquette, social activities director says that the group is very close. Five of the members make up the physical chemistry class. Classmates share in bringing coffee, doughnuts and muffins to class to enjoy during their highly complex work.
