1991-1992 Yearbook

SA-M: SA-M, the Society for the Advancement of Management, exposes business students to career opportunities and current developments in the field of business management. With Lavon Carter as the sponsor, the group worked hard to raise enough funds to send members to the National Conference and Case Competition in Charlottesville, VA. In the fall they held a car wash, a credit card drive and a club watch sale. These events, along with a bowling tournament in the spring, helped SA-M send a team to the competition. The conference theme was "Managing a Diverse Workforce" and featured speakers on such topics as women and minorities in the ~ workplace. Also included ~ were several session on im- ~ proving campus chapters ~ and sharing ideas. ~ c: fii ~ Although the conference ~ 58 ORGANIZATIONS Management Students Raise Money For Conference trip was the culmination of the year's work, it was not their only goal. Janelle Mcfarland, Chapter President for 1991, stated, "I think that students involved in SA-M gain experience in both organizational and personal areas. It is just as important to enter the case competition as it is to excite people about fund raisers." Another important activity for SA-M was the special speakers. In October, members and other students were invited to hear a Harding graduate (name withheld) speak on " Sexual Harassment in the Work Place." This young woman shared her experiences and offered her advice at a time when all of America was tuning in to the Supreme Court Hearings on nominee Clarence Thomas. The message was timely and informative to all who attended. In the future, SA-M members hoped to bring in more speakers to relate the working world to all students and they plan to send even more students to the 1993 conference. + - Janelle Mcfarland SOCIETY FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF MANAGEMENT 1st row (I to r ): Paula Peebles, Rudolf J.
