1991-1992 Yearbook

This past semester I was greeted in the Student Center by a freshman with the question, "What is the S. A.? The senior class officers?" I found this question rather humorous . until I remembered asking the S. A. president the same question myself when I was a freshman. I tried to explain to him what the S. A. was all about; and although my reply may not have sparked any interest in the fellow who questioned me, the answer I ~ received nearly ~ four years ago in- ~ stilled within me ~ a deep desire to ~ work with the or- Q ganiza1ion of~ which my presi- ~ dent spoke so proudly. So what did I tell him? In a general sense, the S.A. is another word for the student body Most of those involved with the S. A. serve on one of the various committees which range from "Homecoming" to "Food Services" and organize and supervise the many S. A. activities. Such activities are of the utmost importance to our purpose. Article III section 2 of the s. A. constitution declares the objectives of the organization: "(The s. A. 's purpose) shall be to perpetuate the goals of the university, actthat most people have about the S. A. comes from the misconception that the president does all the work. In reality, however, the backbone is formed by people such as Monica Chapman, Chris Gonzales, Tom Ed Simmons, and the numerous others who have spent many nights collecting money, planning events and implementing projects. I don't know ifthe freshman YOU. It's a student organization consisting of an Executive Council composed of officers who addressed me will also decide to run for S. A. president like I did; but this I do know: in all probability he will end his time here at Harding with a host of fond memories and lasting relationships. Not just because of the lights the Christmas committee put up or due to some new by-law passed by the Executive Council CAUGHT IN THE ACT. Student Association President Steve Martin wonders if all student leaders find themselves victimized by Pledge Week escapades such as this sudden arrest. Martin was whisked off the sidewalk and charged with impersonating an Important Person; he was released moments later on his 9wn recognizance. . but simply because of the type of people this place seems to continually attract.+ of the S. A., and a male and female representative from each of the four classes. r:.XE.CUTIVr:.
