For the 75 years since the Soviet Union's conception in 1917 with the abolition of the Tsar, nations watched as the communist country slowly became a world power - with no end to their power in sight. Former Prime Minister Nikita Kruschev felt so confident in communism that he boasted in 1960 that communism would outlast democracy. Kruschev's prediction proved false. Though Mikhail Gorbechev later sought to remedy the problems that riddled his government, the communist regime was doomed to fail. As reforms were implemented, the people became more and more dissatisfied. Every year Gorbechev was in power, the economy suffered; and goods in high demand became more and more scarce. Gorbechev rapidly lost his popularity as well as his remaining power, and stepped down from his office on January 1, 1992. This officially dissolved the Soviet Union and freed the once unified republics. In the early months of political reconstruction, the newly-liberated Russian republics were vulnerable to possible authoritarian takeovers. Dr. Fred Jewell, professor of history, explained, "It would not be entirely impossible for a conservative, right-wing movement to gain control of the government and instill a sense of law and order among the republics."
