- CLINTON PROFILE. Governor Bill Clinton announces his candidacy for president. Clinton was in Little Rock when he made this announcement. ~ Governor Runs For President ~ This year's presidential campaign was 2 a special one for Arkansas. For the ?- first time in American history, an Arkansas governor, BiJJ Clinton, was seeking the Democratic nomination for United States president. Although Clinton received widespread support in his race for governor, some of these supporters thought he should stay in Arkansas. Probably the best known of these supporters at Narding was Dr. Raymond Muncy, Chairman of the Department of Nistory and Social Sciences. In Clinton's last race for governor; Muncy campaigned for him but as Clinton ran for the Democratic Presidential Nomination, he withdrew his support. When asked about the switch, Muncy said he thought Clinton would be more effective if he stayed in Arkansas. "The best thing for Clinton would be for him to Jose the nomination for the presidency. Then he could come back to Arkansas, put his ideas into action, clean up his record and try for the presidency again." Muncy's beliefs were based on Clinton's Jack of experience and his poor record as Arkansas governor. Clinton has no international or foreign relations experience nor has he used his talents to help his home state. " Arkansas ranks economically among the poorest states, has a weak public education system, is environmentally sick and a lot ofindustry has recently moved out. This shows the American people that Clinton cannot even help his own state and will cause them to doubt his claims of being able to help the nation," explained Muncy. Despite his inexperience and record, Clinton had a significant lead as of the Jan. polls. Time would tell if Clinton would remain standing.+ - David Jacobs Tammy Michelle White · Long Beach . MS.
