Communication For A Cause The phone-a-thon was a program devised by the Development office to raise money for the renovation of the Coe American Studies Building, the Administration Building and the Hammond Student Center. It began on September 8, 1991 and continued through November 1991. The purpose of the phone-a-thon was to match the $1.5 million challenge gift by the Mabee Foundation of Tulsa. In order to receive the Mabee donation, Harding had to raise $1 million in gifts and pledges by April 10, 1992. The phone-a-thon worked by having faculty, staff, and students call alumni C' and friends to ask for their help in ~ meeting the Mabee challenge. As of ; September 30, 1991, $640,000 had ~ been raised toward the phone-a-thon ~ goal. One of the faculty members, Dr. $ Bobby Coker said, "The phone-a-thon is probably one of the hardest things I'm asked to do, but because it is important to the University, I do it. " Coker became involved after the Development office requested his help. He enjoyed the phone-a-t;hon because he got the chance to talk to people he HELLO OPERATOR. Coker said, "I ask them what they are doing and so forth." He mostly contacted his former students and previous contacts. This was Coker's 4th phone-a-thon. Other participating faculty/staff members were Kathleen Campbell who had 88 percent success, Cliff Ganus III who had 94 percent success, Cliff Ganus Jr. who had 93 percent success, Ken Davis who had 82 percent success, Dean Priest who had 76 percent success, and Barby Smith who had 90 percent success. Even though it didn't get a lot of press coverage, the phone-a-thon was sue- . cessful in what it set out to do: gathering pledges and donations for the university. Coker summed up his feelings with a statement of commitment, "If I were asked to work on the phone-athon again next year, I would definitely do it. " + - Angela Anderson
