In Victory Or Defeat All Who Ran Won In the 1991 fall semester 45 students began the task of running for a class office. Upset stomachs, long nights without sleep, and lots of Rolaids were in store for these students over the next two weeks as they filled out forms and planned campaign strategies. Each student was required to petition 50 students for their support in the election. Visibility was the biggest factor in campaigning, and there was no better place to campaign than the student center. Although the requirements to run were not too difficult, it David s. For three days, the 45 students promoted themselves with creative slogans, pictures and whatever else was necessary to raise the support of other students. Once the campaigning was over, all the candidates could do was sit and wait. Awaiting the totals was hard on many of the candidates; even the most confident had their doubtful moments. Scott Baine, who won the freshman S.A. representative position said, "The competition was very tough and at times I felt I didn't have a chance." Although all couldn't win, everyone who participated said they enjoyed themselves. Although they didn't obtain the positions that they set out to get, several candidates were satisfied with just being able to compete. Christene Richart, who ran for freshman president said, ' 'Although I didn't win, I accomplished a great goal of mine just by running against an opponent. Running for office is more than just competition against another person. It is a great way to meet people and make friends." Judy Baker, who ran for freshman vice president, agreed, "It's hard to be happy when you lose, but there's a satisfaction you have knowing you have accomplished something." Baker continued, " After all, winning isn't everything."+ - Eric French THE BALLOTS ARE IN. Sophomores Molly Majors and Alissa Jackson cast their ballots for class officers in the student center. Participation in voting was a concern during school-wide elections.
