Music Organizations: Pep Band, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band, and Jazz Band worked to achieve instrumental excellence The styles ranged from classical to jazz, but they all served the Harding student body in their own unique way·. The pep band was used to encourage the basketball team this season. The pep band introduced a new format this year with the use of two groups. This was done to facilitate the great interest, large number of instrumentalists and different time schedules. John Tebo, one of the student directors for the pep bands, said, "Pep Band is a close group. We are just one big family." The Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Jeff Hopper and Dr. Arthur Shearin, provided an outlet for orchestral music among the students and community of Searcy. The main activity of the Orchestra was to perform for the musical, "My Fair Lady." Dr. Warren Casey directed the Concert Band. The band was involved with many of their annual concerts as well as a trip to the St. Louis area. They performed in the American Heritage and in their annul front lawn spring performance. The Jazz Band rocked with many exciting activities this year. Under the direction of Dr. Casey they also started a new format. They used the regular large band, but also started a small jazz combo. They performed at Greers Ferry High School and at the Memphis Jazz Festival. Their big event for the year was a performance with Vince Andrews, a professional saxophonist. Kirk Bowman, a five year member of the band, said, "We have improved at a steady rate over the years I have been here. The campus interest in jazz has increased and hopefully we will have to create two jazz bands. This work with Vince Andrews will become an annual workshop and we hope to bring in some Christian jazz musicians." by Mark DeYoung Music Organizations 271 _;_J
