This refers to the Physical Plant, also known as the Maintenance Department, under the direction of the Physical Plant Engineer, Dr. William Ryan. The Physical Plant was subdivided into five departments: Power Plant; Carpentry and Painting; Mechanical Services; Grounds; and Custodial. The Power Plant, with a staff of only eight people supervised by Danny Deramus was responsible for running the heating and air conditioning systems on most of the campus. At one time the Power Plant generated 100 percent of the electricity used on campus. Another department was Carpentry and Painting consisting of sixteen employees supervised by James Rumfield. Every built-in cabinet or shelf in every office, nook, and cranny was produced by this department. When the plumbing was stopped up, broken, or was leaking on campus, one wanted service immeLouise Spearman-Cataloging Assistant, Library Bill Spurlock -Sheet Metal Foreman Suzanne Spurrier-Library Director Don Starks -Assistant Director of Admissions Se rvices Ralph Sterling-Ca rpenter Wanda Stewart-Custod ian , Library Earnestine Thomas -Presse r, Harding Laundry Mary Lois Thomas-Secretary Danny Townsend -Folder Operator Lott Tucker-Vice-President of Finance Mae Anne Tucker -Head Cashier, Harding Bookstore Joann Underwood -Ass istant University Attorney 266 Guided Impressions diately. There were fifteen employees working under the supervision of Alfred Prince in Mechanical Service to handle problems as quickly as possible. Many townspeople, visitors, and students noticed that Harding University's campus was constantly being beautified. Much of the credit was given to Johnny Ferguson and his crew of t en employees who were in charge of the grounds. The Custodial Department supervised by Clyde Owen consisted of thirty-seven employees. They swept, vacuumed, mopped, washed, polished, wiped, cleaned, straightened, and picked up after the students and staff. The Physical Plant kept things at Harding Uni - versity working, comfortable, and attractive. It was quite a job considering the 46 buildings on 200 acres plus the many rental properties. In addition, There were 3000 students and 500 hundred staff t o serve. The small force of ninety employees of the Maintenance Department handled about 15,000 service calls this year. - Carmen Hudgins
