College of Bible and Religion Ne~ Youth Ministry Degree Grows Harding's College of Bible and Religion experienced much growth in the past year. Among additions to the staff were Flavil Yeakley, Dan Stockstill, John Fortner, and a visiting professor of missions from Brazil, Jeff Custer. The Bible department offered several areas of study, including biblical languages, missions, and special programs for women. A new addition to the curriculum was the vocational ministry program. So far, about 50 people have added the program as a second major, and Dr. Carl Mitchell hoped to see the number exceed 600 next year. The program was open to men and women who were interested in developing their gifts of ministry. "We are all priests and ministers in our Christian lives; we all have a ministry to fulfill," said Mitchell. The program's functions were to provide training in personal ministry and to give students a foundation for effective work in the church in addition to required Bible classes. Mitchell said, "We hope to set an example for other Christian colleges who are watching us, so that they will develop similar programs." Harding's School of Biblical Studies was a two-year certificate program designed to prepare students for full-time work. HSBS students were "usually older students who are recent converts, and may already have a degree," according to Mitchell. Women in the program learned teaching skills to use while working with children. Mitchell said that the goal of the Bible department was to "help the student's personal spiritual preparation for his life's work in the church, whether as a church-supported effort or self-supported."
