Kenneth Hobby talks with two students while taking a break in the student center. Hobby was an Associate Professor of Psychology. College of Arts and Sciences Department of Behavioral Sciences Department Prepares Students for Graduate Studies Dr. Jack Thomas chaired the department of Behavioral Science. This facet of the Harding curriculum offered majors in the areas of psychology, human resources, social work, and sociology. He, along with other professors and assistants, worked toward the departmental goal of "enriching student knowledge and appreciation of the influence of ideas in human affairs" as they taught, guided, and inter-acted with the student body. The psychology field supported 150 majors and planned to offer a new course entitled Advanced Research that provided experience in writing research reports in a doctoral format which could be submitted on a resume for entrance into graduate programs. The 100 students who pursued a Human Resources major enjoyed the flexibility of an interdisciplinary program between the School of Business and the Department of Behavioral Sciences which incorporated an indepth study of psychology as well as business. This fairly new curriculum was designed to give behavioral science majors the courses that would permit immediate employment in the field of psychology or allow further graduate studies. The social work program under the direction of Terry Smith emphasized helping people. This curriculum involved personal counseling as well as human resource experiences for its students. The department prepared students for dealing with problems such as child abuse, alcoholism, and mental health difficulties. They sponsored such programs as Resident of the Month, Blue Ribbon Day, as well as other volunteer programs. The sociology field also focused on human awareness as they concentrated on the understanding of the social and cultural aspects of human behavior. The curriculum provided an opportunity to obtain an emphasis in research, gerontology, family life, human services, or professional child care. by Anissa Campbell Behavioral Science 251
