College of Arts and Sciences Department of Physical Education, Health, and Recreation Wellness Center Formed There were many new developments in the Physical Education Department under the direction of Dr. Harry Olree. Several of the coaches worked on their doctorates, there was an addition of new equipment such as the metabolic cart, and also the development of the Wellness program. Harding adopted a Wellness program which incorporated the five dimensions of total wellness: spiritual, social, physical, intellectual, and emotional. The goal of the program was to instruct students to strive to achieve a balance between those five dimensions. Plans included a wellness center to be set up to monitor blood pressure, respiratory capacity, flexibility, strength assessment, blood lipids, and exercise prescription. It was available to anyone interested in determining their level of health and improving overall fitness. The Wellness Center was a part of the health, physical education, and recreation department. The facility was located in the Clark Research Center in the science building. As the Wellness program took shape, coaches kept the pace going with their various sports. Athletics proved to be a vital part of the lives of the athletes, not only in physical activity but also in spiritual and educational well being. One athlete said that coaches at Harding strive for improvement in their athletes physical ability as well as improving other areas of their lives. -Jessica Nelson Music & Physical Education 249
