College of Arts and Sciences Department of Mathematics and Computer Science Math Professors Better the Program The objectives of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science were to provide students with cultural training in mathematics and computer science. Dr. Steve Smith and 12 other faculty members in the department also helped to prepare students to teach mathematics at the secondary school level. Mathematics majors could elect to receive either a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts degree. One department goal was to lay a foundation of mathematics and computer science for students as part of the General Education Program as all university students had to satisfy a general education math requirement. Dr. Travis Thompson was being considered for the editorship of the Journal of Math for two-year colleges. Gene Dugger and Deborah Duke continued their doctorat e work at Memphis State University. Dr. Bill Oldham continued to direct the mathematics education program while Dr. Tim Baird was the director of computing degrees. John Nunnally was director of information services for the entire university. Clearly, the mathematics and computer science faculty at Harding were working t o lay a broad foundation in computing and mathematics for students majoring in these areas. by Amy Stroud Math and Computer Department 247
