College of Arts and Sciences Department of History and Social Science History Department Makes Changes The history department professors were busy with both individual and departmental projects during the year. Dr. Ray Muncy, chairman of the department, was busy directing the AEGIS Program for the Gifted and Talented in the secondary schools during the summer. Muncy was also involved in the final stages of publication of a book. Mark Elrod continued work on his doctoral dissertation and planned to finish by the summer. Elrod will receive the doctoral degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. Dr. Tom Howard planned to return to full time classroom teaching after giving up his duties as Director of Institutional Testing. Dr. Fred Jewell was also active in the publishing world during the year. A new faculty member, Dr. Paul Hnynie, was added for the beginning of the school year upon the retirement of Virgil Lawyer. The main goal of the Department of History and Social Science was to give students basic information concerning the social forces and institutions which affect civilization and the fundamental principles underlying enlightened citizenship and international relations. Students could also prepare to teach history and social science at the elementary or secondary level. A number of students worked to better prepare themselves for graduate study in political science, history, and government service. by Amy Stroud Foreign Lang./History Department 245 l
