Prepares Students A basic knowledge of science was important in any field. One of the main objectives in the biology department, therefore, was to provide general classes for all students. Training teachers of biology, equipping students for graduate study, and preparing students in such fields as medicine and dentistry were also key functions of the department. Biology majors selected either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Sciences degree. A GRE Subject Test was required for graduation. Professor George Woodruf retired at the end of this year which caused some shift of positions in the department. Dr. John Moon from the University of Arizona assumed the role of department chairman. Dr. Michael Plummer, the current chairman, retired from his position, but will remain on the staff. Last summer, several biology students further explored their field by traveling to study labs in Georgia and Washington. Other programs will continue to be encouraged by the department. by Carolyn Holmes Art/Biology Department 241
