L. "Butch" Gardner Dean of Students Foy O'Neal Dean of Men Kay Gowen Dean of Women Steve Beliech Assistant Dean of Men Student Deans Have High Expectations "Report to the Student Affairs office." Most students would shudder at the sound of those words, trying to figure out what they did wrong. Why would anyone in that office want to see me? Do I have too many chapel skips, or is my skirt regulation length? But, according to Kay Gowen, Dean of Women, students shouldn't be on the defensive. "We aren't out to get them, we only have their best interests at heart," Gowen said. Kay Gowen assumed the position of Dean of Women in 1989 after Maribeth Downing left the post to return to the 234 Guided Impressions classroom full-time. Prior to that, Gowen served as Assistant Director to Public Relations for Harding. The office next to Gowen's belonged to Foy O'Neal, Dean of Men. O'Neal stepped into his position after Butch Gardner was appointed Dean of Students in 1989. O'Neal previously served as Assistant Director of Admissions for Harding. O'Neal remarked on his former position, "Before, I got to recruit the students, but I never really got to know them." Assisting O'Neal with his duties was Steve Beliech. Beliech also served as Director of Student Activities, which ineludes selecting entertainment for Harding students and the White County community. When asked about goals for the 19911992 school year, Gowen responded by saying the "improvements need to be made in the resident hall life, the social club system, and the overall spiritual environment on campus." With those goals in mind, it was apparent that all the administrative changes made two years ago were effective ones which have benefited the student body. by April Cantrell
