Benson Benson Still Serving after 54 Years He dedicated his life to Christian education, and for the past 54 years George S. Benson made Harding his home. In 1936 at the urging of his colleagues, Benson left missionary work in China to accept the presidency at Harding College. The United States was in the midst of the Depression, and Harding was facing bankruptcy. Despite the enormous task he was facing, Benson viewed the job as an opportunity to further education. Further it he did. During his presidency, Benson raised an average of $1 million per year and left a $13 million endowment at the time of his retirement. Between raising money and regulating daily activities, Benson said he had no free time when he served as 228 Guided Impressions president. After serving as president of Harding for 29 years, Benson accepted the position of President Emeritus. Although Benson referred to the position as "honorary," his days were still full. Looking to the future, Benson said Harding's number one priority should be to maintain its character and dependability. As for himself, Benson said, "I'm 92 years old so I've learned how to behave myself." by Leslie Holland SPECIAL OCCASION.
