Faculty members found participation in intramural athletics to be an excellent way to stay in shape. Photo by Leslie Downs. Personal Sports From the front lawn to the pool tables in the bowling alley, sports played an important part of the leisure activities of students and faculty members. Physical fitness was a major reason that many participated in athletic activities. Another was that participation in team sports provided opportunities for relationships. Fall afternoons found the men's faculty softball team in action against several different men's intramural teams. The men's faculty team played a regular intramural schedule. The faculty also participated in basketball intramural activity. Some dorm lobbies provided table tennis facilities for residents. The tables were the scene of many late-night impromptu tournaments. Amateur bodybuilders also found it easy to convert a dorm room into a weight room. The arrival of early spring weather gave front lawn volleyball and frisbee players a place to congregate. Many afternoons found several of the Chi Sig volleyball team polishing their game. Frisbee and Hackey-Sack were also popular. The Hammon Student Center also provided a place for personal sports. A bowling lane, pool room and video games were just three of the ways could enjoy activities just for fun. Students also played in a variety of off-campus leagues. Bobby Moore, a sophomore Galaxy member, organized a team to compete in a Searcy open softball tournament. Several students and faculty members participated. "I wanted to play in the city tournament because it gave me a chance to play more than just the usual two or three club games." said Tim Scott, a sophomore sports enthusiast. "It was a fun way to spend the weekend." Whether it was pickup basketball games in the old gym or touch football at Riverside Park, informal sports participation was a vital part of the Harding experience. Casual Sports 223
