1990-1991 Yearbook

Runners Named to AIC It's the nature of track and field events to call special attention to individual talent, and those members of Coach Ted Lloyd's team this past year demonstrated their distinctive abilities. Harding won five out of their six AIC meets and every runner who won, also was named All-AIC. Special recognition was given to Jon Murray as he captured the national marathon championship at Charleston State University with a record time of 2:33.16. Murray was the sixth Harding athlete to win a national championship: He also won fourth in the two-mile indoor run and was named NAIA American Scholar athlete. In addition Murray won the 1500, 5000, and 10,000 meter runs at the AIC meet and claimed the record for winning all three events in one meet. Terry Albright also received distinctive honors in the shot put event as he claimed firstplace in the AIC. Jimmy Sloan also demonstrated superior ability as he championed the AIC pole vaulting event. Lloyd commented, "Harding had a successful year all around. The year was topped by Jon winning the national championship. It was a very exciting race." But Lloyd's thirty years of coaching experience has taught him the importance of teamwork even in an individualized competition like track and field. Murray reinforced this attitude as he said that even though the year was "sort of a dream season ... I did everything I could to help the team." Evidently this motivation was highly effective. The individual successes encouraged each person to work together and build the unity that led to the ultimate team victory, and as the scoreboard indicates, these tracksters did just that. by Janet Morrison Front row: Jon Murray, Kevin Yawz, Jason Koch, Jimmy Sloan, Ken Edwards, Shawn Mays, Chris Hobby, Tony Davis, Eric Cook.
