. ttonor 8ocielies Honor societies benefit students S everal honor societies on campus allowed students to become active within their chosen field. Kappa Pi, Delta Mu Delta, Pi Kappa Delta, and Sigma Tau Delta honored students for their academic talents as well as their outside achievements. Kappa Pi offered many opportunities to students majoring in art. Members were required to take twelve credit hours in the area of art, carry a 3.0 grade point average in all art classes, and 2.5 overall. Dr. George Oliver served as faculty sponsor. The purpose of the honor society was to encourage high scholarship and to recognize students in the school of business. Members were required to have a 3.2 grade point average and be in the top 20 percent of the class with completion of 64 hours. The English honor society, Sigma Tau Delta, helped publish Shapes and Names, the English department's annual literary magazine. Membership requirement was a 3.0 overall grade point average. Dr. Organ and Dr. Long sponsored Sigma Tau Delta. Pi Kappa Delta, the honor society for forensics, participated in numerous intercollegiate tournaments, as well as helped to host the annual Harding University Forensics Tournament which was for high school students. "Pi Kappa Delta gave me the opportunity to compete nationally with other Universities," said Suzette Koch, a member of Pi Kappa Delta. Dr. Patrick Garner served as sponsor. Pi Sigma Alpha was an honor society for students majoring or minoring in Political Science. It promoted scholarship and gave special recognition to deserving members. John Suit, a member commented, "Pi Sigma Alpha gave us the opportunity to associate with students who had similar interests. It also provided an arena to explore our different political views.
