Volleyball Determination paid, victorious season T he Lady Bison volleyball team combined hard work and determination to produce a victorious season. After five key players completed their eligibility at the end of the 1988 fall semester, the 1989 season was questionable , but the new year had several surprises. Coach Kary 1 Bailey said, " Last spring, I told the veteran players that if they work hard, there would be a good solid volleyball team even if there was no help from the freshman class." "Not only was the re a tremendous improvement from the veteran women , but there was a surprising addition. Seven capable freshmen joined the SCOREBOARD HARDING U. .... . . .. . . 11-1 SOUTHERN ARK. U... .. 11-1 AkK. :EC1-i u. . ........ 11-1 HENDERSON STATE . ... 5-7 CENTRAL ARK. . . . . . . . . 4-8 OUACHITA BAPTIST U... 4-8 HENDRIX COLLEGE .... 1-11 squad, promising a great deal of character and talent," Bailey said. Four juniors and three sophomores made up the rest of the team. "The veterans provided leadership in every sense of the word," Bailey said. The Lady Bisons improved in two aspects of the game. According to Bailey, the team was a better hitting team and a better blocking team than in prev10us years. "Blocking," Bailey said, "was probably the biggest single factor for their winning season." " This year's team didn't know what it meant to give up ," he said. - Lex Owens Volleyball 69
