[ Golf Expectations fulfilled, season a challenge T he 1988-1989 Bison golf team entered the season expecting a second place conference championship. Their expectations were fulfilled. The team took a one-stroke edge over Arkansas Tech in district play. Seven returning players and one freshman lead the Bisons in an exciting season. "It was a really good season," Coach Russell Showalter said. "We had a lot of good guys playing. We may not have been conference champions but we did our best." The Bisons started the season with a disappointing fourth place finish at the Red Apple Inn, but managed to finish second or third in the remaining five tournaments, to pull back to a third place conference finish behind second place Arkansas Tech University and first place Henderson State University, who were ranked in the national top 10. The Bison team had several AIC individual leaders, including David Converse with an average of 80.2, Robert Master with an average of 81.6, Matt Patton with an average of 82.2, and Todd Rinehart with an average of 83.0. Converse was also named to the All-District team.
