1989-1990 Yearbook

"Our members work together, building unity and respect for one another." - · Alvin Henry ' 'The few, the proud, the Bucs." True to its word, that is the motto for Buccaneers social club. There were less than 30 members in this unique club, most of whom were members of the varsity athletic teams. The Bucs stressed brotherhood between its members, resulting in a close-knit group. And al~ th_ough its numb~rs seemed small, Bucs competed in the "big club" division in club sports. They won championships in Aand B-team basketball, were finalists in track and C- and D-team basketball, and were semi-finalists in last year's spring softball tournament. Although Bucs consisted of mostly athletes, president Alvin Henry denied the accusation that the club was partisan to athletes: "We like any man to join. If guys are interested in our club and like who we are and what we are about, he is our kind of people." Bucs has only been a club for a few years. Formed after the club Mohicans disbanded, the Bucs worked at representing Harding and what she stands for. "The Buccaneers club was formed to give friends a chance to unify and be recognized," said Henry. "About the only thing we don't do as a club is Spring Sing." Bucs is active in service projects and has plans to expand its scope of service. Bucs' main annual service project involved the raising of money for Cornelia DelanK Syndrome, a birth defect striking one in a million children in which the body ages but mental capacity does not. Using the slogan, "Give a buck to the Bucs," the club covered the campus and the Searcy community, raising $1,500 last year. "To many it may not seem like we do much, and it is true in the fall because of our busy football schedules," said Mark Thomas, Bucs' public relations director. "But we do many things as a club; they are just mostly behind-the-scenes kinds of things." Thomas added that more will be heard about Bucs in semesters to come. - Mark Thomas PRESIDENTIAL WORDS OF WISDOM. Bucs president Alvin Henry, senior, speaks to male students on campus during his 1990 Student Lectureship lesson, "God's Family, God's Army, God's Team." Begun last year, the Harding Student Lectureship has become a popular annual event, as it is completely conducted by Harding students. Henry and other such students who had proven their leadership abilities were selected to coordinate the lectureship sessions, which were well attended. In addition to Henry's position as president of Bucs, he also was a member of the varsity football team. - Photo by Wayne Westerholm. 230 Endless Friendships YOUNG SUPPORT.
