One such beginning was the addition of an organized men's group of JOY service club. Where as men from different social clubs always helped out in the past, this year was the first year that the men were officially recognized. The men of JOY consisted of approximately 35 men. The group started by Dave Jenkins, a grad student, and Brent Carr, a junior. The men were not assigned to a particular JOY committee or group, they just worked wherever they were needed, a system Carr referred to as "on call." The main areas where the men were utilized were with the parties held by the children's committee and the Sunshine school committees; they were also used to do any heavy work that the women of JOY could not do alone. Carr described the group as basically a support group, but said that he would like to see it change. "It really gives us a better chance to get involved with people in JOY and the community, but I would like to see us get even more involved in the years to come, to take more supportive role." The men of JOY did have a few activities of their own during the 89-90 school year, though. In the spring semester they planned and performed an after-curfew devotional for each of the women's dorms. Each person who was assigned to speak was given the same topic and they studied together so that all the women would get the same lesson. Dave Jenkins summed up the attit udes of the men of JOY when he said, "It's just helping out where we're needed, we had an opportunity to serve Christ in a quiet way and we decided to do it." -Trena Shaw
