The majority of the mud, hammering and drilling was associated with the renovation of Beaumont Memorial Library. The original building, erected in 1949 and already twice expanded, was nearly leveled to allow for the construction of a larger, modern building. Plans for the new library began in 1987. The staff began moving volumes from the building in July of 1989 to the temporary library located in the auditorium of the Administration Building. Because of limited space, only . the most frequently used books were kept on the shelves while others were put in storage. "The moving period in the summer was rough but things are working out just fine now," said David Vaughn, senior. Winnie Bell, librarian, was pleased with the students' cooperation and did regret that socializing had to be cut from the library due to lack of space. Robin L. Pierce - Plain Dealing, LA George S. It was also designed to easily incorporate expansion, which the staff hoped to see take place within the next five years. New equipment included two more microfiche view~rs, one additional microfilm viewer, and a computerized card catalog system. There were also five new indexing systems added onto the computer. The first floor will contain reference collections, a card catalog media collection, microfilm, microfiche and a bibliographical instruction classroom that will hold up to 40 students. The second floor will house stack books, bound periodicals, juvenile books , government documents, and six group-study rooms. In January, Dr. David Burks announced that the $1.6 million cost of the renovation was covered in a single donation to the university by Bob and Sandy Brackett of Vero Beach, Fla. Burks also announced that the new facility would be named in honor of the Bracketts. - Lori Rose ON SITE. Construction workers take a break during the renovation process.
