Last year saw the introduction of lights on the campus buildings, but this year the SA added more than 11,000 lights to the existing decorations , to give the campus a look that had everyone talking. Instead of simply outlining buildings, lights were used to decorate bushes, trees and practically anything else that would hold the bulbs. A huge Christmas tree was also decorated on the front lawn. The tree, which stood over 40 feet tall, was also decorated with lights and bows to bring yuletide cheer. The tree also sported large wrapped boxes for decoration. "The tree would not have been possible without a lot of time and effort by many people, especially Brent Abney, Vaughn Ward, Dr. Bill Ryan and others from the physical plant," said SA president Craig Cheatham. Over-sized decorations created by Searcy elementary school children also decorated the campus tree. While the Student Association coordinated the decorating of public buildings on campus, the yuletide fever to make Santa welcome spread everywhere and caused students to deck more than the halls. From windows and shelves to doorways and countertops, nothing was off limits for glittering tinsel and garlands of greenery. For some students like Julie Owen, decorating for Christmas was simply a way to ease the holiday blues. "Usually at this time of year, my mom starts to decorate our house in Palm Springs," said Owen. "This is a way for me to feel closer to home when I'm so far away. " While some students were dri - ven to decorate out of sentiment, others felt the spirit of competition. While the "Wing of Love" challenge of last year was hard to beat, a group of students living on the t hird floor of the new men's dormitory tried to evoke a spirit of competition among themselves and from other dorms. "It's great to look from outside and be able to say, 'Hey, that's our window!"' said Wade Osburn. "My lights blink the fastest." Over the last few years , Christmas has taken on a deeper meaning at Harding. The combination · of the efforts of the Student Association and students involved in individual decorating projects helped to make the 1989 Christmas season one of the most cheerful ever. - Mark Hodges and Caryllee Parker 'TIS CHRISTMAS TIME ON THE CAMPUS.
