Svymbersky - Derby, KS Harding grows, changes in the BO's T he eighties brought many changes for the students and faculty of Harding. It was a decade full of transformations: transformations in the physical campus of Harding and also in the people of Harding. The HUF (Harding University in Florence) program sent its first group of 20 students to Italy, with Don Shackelford and Gary Elliott advising. "A Midsummer Night's Dream" was performed as the homecoming musical. Sigma Phi Mu, a new social club, was formed. Chi Sigma Alpha and Regina won the sweepstakes trophy in Spring Sing with their Indian powwow of "Cancel My Reservation." The "New Dorm" built in 1975 was named Sears Hall. 1981-1982 A computer science major was added in the fall and "Shenandoah" was performed at Homecoming. Thompson - Nederland , TX 172 Endless Faces was officially eliminated from Pledge Week activities. Chi Sigs and Regina won the sweepstakes trophy in Spring Sing. 1983-1984 Pledge Week was changed to a four week induction period. Women's curfew was extended to 11 p.m. on week nights. Pi Kappa Epsilon and Ka Re Ta won the sweepstakes trophy for "Service with a Smile." 1984-1985 The addition to the Science Building was completed and the coed social club Echad was started. A School of Biblical Studies was established in the Bahamas. A summer session for HUF was set to begin in 1986. Chi Sigs and Regina won the Spring Sing sweepstakes trophy with their cavemen singing about how "Our World's Caving In." 1985-1986 Cable television was installed in all dormitories. Pattie Cobb Cafeteria was renovated and the University's Channel 12 began amng programs for cable television. Alpha Kappa Phi disbanded. "The Music Man" was performed at Homecoming. The campus power plant began operating. 1986-1987 Dr. David B. Burks was named to succeed Dr. Clifton L. Ganus, Jr., as president of Harding University. The Student. Impact orientation program began. "Annie" was performed before a sellout audience at Homecoming. Dr. Clifton L. Ganus, Jr., was named as Harding's first Chancellor. The power plant caught fire causing minor damage. The Bisons won their first-ever District 17 crown. Chi Sigs and Regina once again won the Spring Sing sweepstakes trophy. 1987-1988 Harding began using the ARA dining services. "The King and I" was performed for Homecoming audiences and heavy snow caused classes to be dismissed for the first time in Harding's history. A weeklong Thanksgiving break was approved. Chi Alpha Rho, OEGE, Knights, Kirei and Shantih won the Spring Sing trophy for "Just Clowning Around." And finally in 1988-1989: The New Men's dormitory was completed and the library renovation program was begun . The American Heritage building was completely remodeled into office space and a hotel for visitors. "Carousel" was performed for Homecoming. AGO, Kirei, Shantih, Chi Alpha Rho, OEGE, King's Men, and Knights won the Spring Sing sweepstakes trophy with an "Easter Eggstravaganza."
