If you had asked three-year old Jason Wolfe or twelve-year old Gina McCoy the answer would have been an enthusiastic "yes." Jason and Gina had three things in common. They were both from Searcy, they both received their wish to visit Disney World, and they were both terminally ill. Through an organization called Arkansas Children's Dreams, Harding University was able to play a small, but important, part in the dream-making process. The idea to get involved in such a project stemmed from S.A. President Craig Cheatham's notion to not only light the campus this Christmas, but to help someone as well. Originally, a Christmas party for orphans was planned, but things just didn't pan out. Cheatham was given a pamphlet concerning a dream-fulfilling organization for terminally ill children and decided to see if Harding could help. The responsibility to find out more information was given to S.A. VicePresident Darren Bonham. Bonham got in touch with Susan O'Conner, a coordinator for Arkansas Children's Dreams, and was given the name of a little girl. But the S.A. decided there wasn't enough time for Harding to raise the money needed, and they would need to wait until after Christmas before committing to a certain child. Soon after the holidays, Bonham contacted Susan and received the names of two Searcy children whose wish was to experience Disney World in Florida. Systematics Company of Little Rock had already donated their company plane for the cause, and other companies had pitched in to provide the necessities. All that was needed was $300 to cover the food tab for the three-day weekend. The S.A. moved into action. An announcement was made in chapel, and a table was set up in the Student center to collect the needed money. Meanwhile, Susan O'Conner put her confidence in Harding by paying the $300 out of her own pocket so that arrangements could be finalized for the children's trip. She had no doubt that Harding would raise the funds. Harding ended up with exactly $300. How did that happen? "Well, actually we were about eleven dollars short," said Cheatham, "but a couple of guys pitched in the rest." Jason, Gina, and their parents were soon off to Florida. Cheatham said the report we had about them after their return was, "They had a blast." For Harding, it was Mission Accomplished. - Kristin Webb Doll y Katherine Nunley - Broaken Arrow. AR Kimberly R.
