'Frozen D's' features friends, fun, A s I walked into the old familiar place, I recognized the atmosphere as well as the distinct aroma. I had been there a million and one times before, but for some odd reason, this particular trip to the wellknown place on Race Street brought a different feeling. Frozen Delight, better known as "Frozen D's " was bustling with well-acq~ainted, excited faces as well as those we had never seen before. The laid-back and relaxed setting offered us the opportunity to get caught up on the summer's gossip as we made plans for the upcoming months. We were puzzled over which flavor of shake to order. Who would have ever thought it would be such a difficult decision? Our minds were used to the ordinary, basic flavors - chocolate, strawberry and vanilla - but Frozen D's had more than 60 delicious flavors and combinations to choose from, ranging from Banana Split to Hot Fudge Oreo Cookie. Our decision would up taking 20 minutes of valuable indulging time. Frozen D's opened in the early 1940s. For the last 12 years, Jerry and Judy Manley have operated the Searcy business, and have enjoyed the interaction with their customers. Mrs. Manley said, "We are so well pleased with the students from Harding; we are happy to see them come in." Frozen D's proved to be a popular hang-out for Harding students needing a break from studies or the dormitory . Plus the old drive-in provided a means of escape from the sometimes dreaded cafeteria scene. It was nice to know there was a place to go to socialize and get away from the norm. We felt a definite welcome by its atmosphere. Freshman Lisa Tacker said, "At times I found myself sitting with friends talking for what seemed to be eternity, and no one ever ran John Albe rt Ogre n - Bloomington, MN. Political Science. Frozen D's served old-fashioned hamburgers, cheeseburgers and other drive-in delicacies, plus its famous milkshakes. Its reputation among Harding students was established and could never be erased. When students left Searcy for holiday breaks or journeyed home for the summer mont hs , Frozen D's felt abandoned and lost some of its character.
