The Social Work department coordinated the Resident-ofthe-Month program to honor one resident from Byrd Haven, Oakdale and Leisure Lodge, the three local nursing homes. "We sponsor the program for a number of reasons ," said Mary Shock, faculty sponsor. "I believe it is important to show the students the value and dignity of the elderly. We also like to spotlight their accomplishments. " Each semester a student coordinator was chosen to plan the programs. Stephanie Elchuck and Rae Anne Carr directed this year's efforts. The coordinators worked to compile a brief history of each resident to be read during the program. Residents also provided insight into their lives by sharing hobbies, special interests and stories of the past. Descriptions of wheelchair race victories, impromptu harmonica performances and revelations of tender love stories delighted student audiences. " I like the fact that we show interest in our community by honoring those who have contributed to our heritage," said Debbie French , semor. "Because so many of our students are separated from their grandparents, we like to provide access to some elderly people so that students can be reminded of special relationships at home." Shock said. Students were invited to come up on the stage after the program to visit with the residents. Improved community relations was also a reason to continue the program. "The families of the residents, many of whom are local, support the program and attend chapel. They love it," said Stephanie Eich uck , spring coordinator . " We make it a point t o contact as many of the resident 's relatives as possible. It 's really heart-warming to see the re - actions of everyone Involved. " -Sharon Bowles
