UNIVER~ITY DEAN~ New dean opens door for administrative changes Whether advising students on their schedules or providing entertainment for the more than 3200 students, the Deans worI<:ed hard. This year brought the creation of a new office-the Dean of Harding University Graduate School of Religion and College of Bible and Religion. Dr. Philip Slate took this position and began his job by reevaluating both schools' curriculum and operations. He hoped that his new position could help unite the two schools even though they were located in different states. Dr. Jerome Barnes, Dean of Campus Life, worked on several projects. One of these was entertainment. As sponsor for the Student Association he brought movies and concerts to the campus. The Dean of the School of Nursing, Dr. Cathleen Shultz negotiated student clinical contracts with area hospitals. She also recommended candidates for State Board Test Pool Examinations. Dr. Bobby Coker served as the Dean of the School of Education. During the school year he met with the State Board of Education Standards and served as the Teacher Certification Officer of the University. Coordinating all of the different departments of the College was the specific duty of Dr. Dean Priest, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Priest also worked as the academic liaison officer with the President's Liberal STUDENT AFFAIRS. Joyce Johnson, Secretary for the Assistant Dean of Students, presents a memo to Butch Gardner. Balancing his time between committee meetings and advising students, Dr. George Oliver served as the Dean of the School of Business. Parts of his job included reviewing the faculty and curriculum to give students the best possible education. Associate Deans of Students Dr. Maribeth Downing and Butch Gardner kept busy helping students in a variety of ways. One of their responsibilities was to interview and choose resident assistants during the spring semester. Deans served on various committees and submitted comprehensive reports at the end of the year. They all had different fields of interest but the Deans worked to provide better leadership now and in the future. -Janelle McFarland RELIGIOUS READING.
