- JULY 3 - The U.S. Navy cruiser Vincennes shot down an Iran Air jetliner over the Persian Gulf, killing all 290 aboard. 6 - The Piper Alpha oil platform explodes in the North Sea, killing 167. DISCOVERY. The shuttle Discovery blasted into orbit in September, the first space flight since the shuttle Challenger mission ended tragically 73 seconds after liftoff on Jan. 28, 1986. Secretary General Javier Perez de Cueller announces a cease-fire in the Iran-Iraq war. 11 - Second Summer Session final examinations. 17 - George Bush is nominated for president by the Republicans. 19 - Student IMPACT began 24 - Fall Semester classes began. 27 - Heavy Flooding hit Bangladesh; thousands perished. 28 - An Italian precision-flying team crashed into an air show crowd in West Germany, killing 70. 28 - College Church meeting on "The Unbelievable, undeniable Jesus," with Jim Woodroof began. 31 - Thirteen died in a Delta Air Lines crash at the Dallas - Ft. Worth Airport. - SE:PTEMBERI 3 - Women's social club open house in American Heritage lobby. 6 - Auditions were held for the homecoming musical, "Carousel." 8 - A firestorm engulfs Old Faithful in a continuing summer of fire and drought in Yellowstone National Park. 10 - Miss Minnesota, Gretchen Carlson wins the Miss America Crown. 12 - Hurricane Gilbert struck Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Mexico. 17 - The Summer Olympics opened in Seoul. 20 - Ground breaking ceremony for the new men's dormitory. 23 - Mantovani orchestra performed in the Benson auditorium. 24 - Dr. George S. Benson's 90th birthday party was held in the newly renovated Heritage Cafeteria. 29 - The shuttle Discovery was launched, resuming the U.S. manned space program. 30 - Parents weekend began. 30 - Grand opening of the "new" Rialto Theatre on the square. 31 - Grand opening ceremony for the newly renovated Pattie Cobb Dormatory. - OCTOBER 2 - Social club bids for new members were accepted - Pledge week 1988 began. 3 - The 65th annual Lectureship began. Landon Saunders offered the first lecture entitled "Jesus: The Happy Servant." The Lectureship theme was, "The Lifestyle of Jesus." 6 - The Student Activities committee presented Michael Martin Murphy in concert with his son, Ryan. 6 - Silly day for social club pledges. 10 - Wellness week on "Lifetime Relationships, Friends, Fellowship, and Family," began. 11 - George Bush Jr. spoke at a GOP rally in the American Heritage Auditorium endorsing his father as the Republican candidate for the presidency. 20 - The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Oakland Athletics to win the World Series. 21 - Deposed Phillippines President Ferdinand Marcos and his wife, Imelda, are indicted in New York on racketeering charges. 21 - High School days began The year in review 137
