Although Student Impact took place August 19-23, the planning began in October of 1987 with the selection of the co-directors, Angie Whitlock, senior from Biscoe, AR, and John Ogren, senior from Bloomington, MN. One of the first things arranged was a spring retreat to train workers in helping with Student Impact. The retreat's purpose was to help the students stress unity and to get the new students involved. The first day of Student Impact new stuLIMBO. The purpose of the groups was to inform lmpaCters about Harding, its rules, clubs, Spiritual life, dating and anything else they needed to know. Of course, another purpose for the groups was to establish a close network of friends. Student Impact also provided many activities to get everyone involved. Events included several mixers, a scavenger hunt that familiarized the new students with the buildings on campus, a water fight on the front lawn, a cheering competition and a Hawaiian luau in the cafeteria. A new event was a Spiritual Life section which planned a devotional for each night. They also spoke to the Impacters each morning. The closing was the candle lighting ceremony. Ross Cochran, Bible professor, spoke at the ceremony. It was concluded by the singing of "A Common Love". Whitlock said, "I believe it is the enthusiasm of the upperclassmen coming back, wanting to serve, and willing to go that extra mile to help a newcomer at Harding. With that kind of attitude how can Student Impact help but be tremendous success." -Shawn Morgan
