1987-1988 Yearbook

Swimming and Diving igh spirits of unity coupled with strong individual talent and high enthusiasm proved to be a winning combination for the Water Buffaloes during the 1987-1988 swim season. Senior co-captain Gary Ashley, from Bonita, CA, said, "The guys on the team were much closer to each other this season than in previous years. We were all headed in the same direction." Ashley's fellow cocaptain, Paul Killingsworth, a junior from Forrest City, AR, agreed. "Everybody pulled for each other, and that made us better as a team in competition. Considering the fact that we only have six swimmers and four divers, we did surprisingly well." It was no surprise that the great amount of mutual support the team members had for each other had a significant effect on individual performances as well. . Junior Rusty McAlister, from Elizabethtown, KY said, "No one stood still this year. We all helped each other to improve." The new freshmen on the team were really a help. One of the most promising rookies was Brian Gainey from Baton Rouge, LA. In just the first two months of the season he sueceeded in breaking two school records in the backstroke. Gainey's teammates couldn't have been more proud of him. Ashley said, "Brian is a wonderful guy. He's the best prospect we've had come to Harding in a long time." The team members were extremely excited about their future. "We all have great hopes for the coming swim seasons. Every guy on the team - from the coaches to the divers, to the swimmers - is giving 110 per cent." McAlister said. "We have a complete team." - Mary Maxwell Swimming and diving team.
