Out of the Shadows Fantastic Friday One of the most innovative changes on the elementary side this year was the addition of Fantastic Fridays, a program designed to supplement the lack of a gifted and talented programwhich would be impossible to have because of the Academy's size. Under the new program the last Friday of each month is designated as a Fantastic Friday with a specific topic for discussion and activity. Community experts in the assigned field are asked to come and discuss the topic with the children and engage them in activities centered around the topic. Topics for this year included culture, drama, science, art and computers. Guests from the community have included Mike Plummer and James Mackey of the Harding University science department, Mrs. Sherrie Pollard speaking on life in England, and Academy teacher Shirley Boyd speaking on German culture. Fantastic Fridays is different than other gifted programs in that all students are included in the initial stage of the program. Elementary Principal Randy Lambeth said that all students are included in this initial stage so that they will at least have been exposed to the activities presented. The truly gifted students, he said, will take what they've learned and expand on it by themselves. Vroom Vroom.
