Evan Ulrey, chairman of the Departnient of Communication and professor of Speech since 1950, received the Distinguished Communication Teacher Award from the Arkansas Speech Communication Association during its annual meeting in the fall. He had served the association in many capacities and for many years had been editor of its publications. In keeping with university policy, Dr. Ulrey made plans to retire as chairman during the coming summer, accenting shades of change at Harding. In addition to providing students a strong academic program in a broad spectrum of majors ranging from print journalism to theater, the department provided the leadership for a broad range of cocurricular activities. Dr. Jack Ryan coordinated the annual Spring Sing that was presented during Youth Forum to audiences totalling 12,000. Robin Miller and Morris Ellis had major responsibility for the Homecoming musical, Dr. Pat Garner directed debate and forensics, Lou Butterfield and Mike James managed I<HCA and Channel 12, and Rebecca Weaver supervised the speech clinics. Butterfield and James prepared a 30-minute video tape, ''Tour of the Arkansas Prison System:' for the Arkansas Department of Correction. Two faculty members taught at HUF - Dr. Richard , Walker in the fall and Ellis in the spring+ 172 Communications Garnering his thoughts. Dr. Pat Garner critiques a student's speech in Speech 101.
