Dr. Van Tate , teacher of sociology and anthropo logy , lectures on author Margaret Mead 's idea concern ing the effects of culture on ma le and fema le ro les. - photo by John R adcliffe. 276 Psychology / Sociology 6 Social Work Tate visits Chane: F orced to meet the veq rigorous demands of th< Council on Social Wor k ---- Education relative to teaching assignments , program review time , distribution of administrative responsibility, and number of faculty members holding the Master of Social Work degree in order to continue the professional accreditation of its outstanding major in social work leading to the Bachelor of Social Work degree , Mr. Terry Smith , with the M.S.W. degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the Master of Divinity degree from Abilene Christian University, was employed as a part-time teacher of social work at the beginning of the 1985 fall semester. The department continued its strong suppor t role for other departments and its contribution to the general education program of the University. Dr. Bill Verkler , chairman of the department of sociology and social work, continued his active involvement in varius sociological organizations and proMiss Mary Shock, director of the social work program, and Miss Louise Pace at - tended the annual meetings of the Council on Social Work Education and the Christian Child Care Conference. Miss Shock assisted senior majors ·in planning and conduct ing a seminar on "Eating Disorders , Human Sexuality , and Psychosomatic Illnesses" in the spring of 1985 . During the summer of 1985, they conducted a seminar on "Alcohol and Drug Addiction ." These seminars were open to the public as well as to the student body. Miss Pace served as a consultant to the Oakdale Nursing Home and assisted senior social work majors with the "Resident of the Month' program that presented an honoree from each of the three nursing homes in Searcy Oakdale, Leisure Lodge, and Byrd Haven once a month in chapel. She also spoke to the Kiwanis Club and the Leisure Lodge employees. During 1984-85 , the departmen t graduated 13 students with the B.S.W. degree and one student with a major in sociology. In the fall of 1985, there were 54 declared majors in the department and the department generated 1,059 semester hours of credit . Jm
