Although the entire Bible faculty was involved, a committee headed by Dr. Allan L. Isom, assistant chairman of the department, made a thorough study of the course offerings. Several courses were dropped, new courses were added, and there was a complete reorganization of courses. An effort was made to prepare for a broad array of practical ministry settings rather than focusing largely on preaching and teaching. A major in ministry was developed that required another major in an effort to prepare better students interested in being vocational missionaries. Because of the increasing demand for youth ministers by Churches of Christ, both a major and a minor in Youth Ministry was developed. The minor was for non-Bible majors. The department secured a HAM radio to provide training in its use to those students who planned to do mission work. It also secured a computer terminal in the University computer system, thereby enabling the department to greatly expand its recruiting, retention and student services. Tom Alexander returned at the beginning of the fall semester from an extended leave of absence for doctoral study at Emory University lacking only the competion of the dissertation for the Ph.D. degree in New Testament.
