Harding Hunters: Back to nature ' ' '/ I ou come away from ' ' Hunting? I'm sure," she said. "You're getting up . at four a.m. on a Saturday to stand in freezing water all morning just to kill ducks ? Why would you want to do that?" The avid hunters of Harding often hear reactions like this as they sit in the cafeteria talking about their upcoming hunting trips, and they ususally answer with something like, "Well , I don't know why, I just like it." That is about the most definite reason that Harding hunters will give you for leaving their books and worries and heading out to the flooded White River to do some duck hunting or going west of Searcy to look for deer. But if you went with them some morning you might find out on your own that hunting means much more to them than just killing a duck or a deer. I think there is something in the woods that draws these guys out of their beds and into their cold camouflage coveralls before the sun has even thought about corning up. You can sense their excitement as they leave the warm dorm. As the sky begins to glow orange through the bare trees in the east and the chilly air stearns your breath, you begin to feel a link with the hunters and trappers that roamed these Arkansas forests years ago. You feel the spirit of real rawhide men like Natty Bumppo and Davy Crockett, men who blazed trails through unknown woods and ate only as well as they could shoot . And as you watch the first deer glide through the thicket or the ducks flying in a "V" over your head, yesterday's chapel program and next week's term paper seem far away . You feel closer to God's creation; you sense His design and power. Unlike the painter or backpacker who try to observe Nature from a distance and remove the presence of man, you are there as a hunter, as an active participant in God's chain of dominion and a respectful master of the lesser creatures. You therefore come away from the hunt with a renewed confidence in God and man 's place in His universe. I guess that 's the reason these students keep hunting. It comes down to the emotions they feel while hunting : the feeling of being in nature and being involved in it. J1tt - Brent Baldwin the hunt with a renewed confidence in God ...
