Groups stress health. care . tr he Student Speech and Hearing Association (SSHA) ·and the Harding Student Nurses' Association ' (HSNA) were two organizations here at Harding that __ 1 helped train students to care for the medical needs of others. SSHA, composed primarily of students majoring in speech pathology, worked closely with the speech clinic. Many student communication disorders majors worked with children with speech problems . This year, the association also provided Halloween, Christmas, and Easter parties for the children that they were trying to help. One of the main purposes of SSHA, according to sponsor Rebecca Weaver, was "to inform the public as to what sources of speech therapy are available." To improve the amount of information that people received concerning communication disorders, the association offered free speech and hearing screenings to the public during the month of May. Other activities sponsored by SSHA included a field trip to the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in November, and involvement in attending the Midsouth Conference on Communication Disorders in the spring. This year , HSNA was also in community as well as university projects . The group assisted Oege social club with their service project, the blood drive. Members of the club signed up for times to take vital signs and test hemoglobin. They also sponsored a supply-raising Christmas drive for a missionary clinic in Haiti. The association also worked with clinics in Panama over spring break and in Nigeria. While in Nigeria, a few nursing students worked at Nigerian Christian Hospital in obstetrics and pediatrics. HSNA was also responsible for a blood pressure screening open to the public. The association also had a masqueraae party for Halloween with the theme "Come As Your Favorite Disease." 4
